1 Ditson, George Leighton The Para Papers On France, Egypt and Ethiopia
New York Mason Brothers 1858 Leather Good
Half-leather with raised bands, marbled boards, edges and endpapers. A good copy with a small dampstain on the lower right corner. Ex-Library indicated by a small spine label and bookplate on the paste-down endpaper. The leather is worn at the extremities and peeling a bit in a few spots. Ditson was born in Massachusetts and was graduated from Vermont University with a degree in Medicine in 1864. Ditson never practiced medicine; instead he travelled extensively in the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Asia and published several books recounting his travels. He was the first foreigner to cross the Caucuses, was an early member of the Theosophical Society and occasionally served U. S. Consul in Nuevitas in Cuba in the 1840's. Kalfatovic writes that The Para Papers offers "a detailed description of Alexandria" and Ditson then "continues his account up the Nile to Wadi Halfa. [He] Includes a description of Mariette's work at the Pyramids, and on up the Nile, he transcribes the graffiti he finds on the tombs and temples". Kalfatovic considers it "A rather good account".
