1 By the Author of "Juliet, or the Reward of Filial Affection; and the Port Folio of a School Girl A Visit to the Bazaar
London Harris & Son 1820 Third Edition Paperback
A volume from Harris's Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction. Leather backed paper covered boards, 5 1/4" x 4 1/4". 92pp + 31 (of 32) handcolored plates (lacks "Shoemaker"). Rebacked in polished calf with a gilt stamped floral motif. The covers are worn, especially at the corners and there is a faint stain and a small chip on the front cover. Several leaves and one plate has been reinforced with clear tape, these repairs appear to have been done during the rebacking. Leaf e2 has been tipped onto the plate eliminating the inner margin, pages 63 & 78 have some scuffing to the text and page 77 has a clear tape repair in the margin. The "Fancy Works" plate has been tipped onto a stub and the "Bookseller" plate has a small stain in the upper margin. Though not perfect, this is a more than presentable copy with many wonderful color plates. Very scarce. "That the stall-holders are not all women and the wares on sale are not all home-produced also suggests that Harris' book sought to represent consumerism in general. As such, the book falls into the tradition of books about visits to the fair, a reasonably extensive genre in late eighteenth-century children's books. These aimed to teach simple moral lessons alongside the virtues of responsible consumerism, and they sought to delight the reader with the thrill purchase and the antics of members of the fair-going public and stall-holders. In a slightly more refined form, this is what we see in A Visit to the Bazaar too" (Hockliffe Project). [Opie B336] 62768
